3 Ways to Winter Proof Your Home

1. Close the gap

Remember every time before turning on the heater your mum would go on and on about making sure all windows are tightly closed. She was talking about the little cracks letting in any cold air and making your heater work unnecessarily harder. So as much as you hate to admit, to avoid being greeted at the letterbox by your new power bill in the worst possible way, inspect your windows, doors, walls and even the foundation for any gaps and cracks – and seal them!

2. Shower smarter

When twenty minutes in a steam-filled shower seems like the only way to defrost after a cold day but that crave completely overrides the thought of your next energy bill. Challenge yourself to limit showers to 10 minutes and install a water-saver showerhead.Always check the water efficiency rating on products and opt for those with a star rating of at least four. This will mean a substantial saving on both your water and energy bill.

3. Be a better heater user

When using heaters or air conditioning, close bedroom doors to concentrate the heating to your area or where it is needed so your heater has a smaller task to do. If your heater has a thermostat setting, are you using it? Too many people answer 'no'. During winter, it is recommended that the thermostat is set between 18 and 20 degrees. What many people do not realise is that by setting the heater at a modest temperature, you are actually saving money. Data has suggested that every degree above 20°C can add 10 per cent to your heating bill so do consider lowering your thermostat and turn to a pair of socks or another layer of clothing. Next time when you get home from work, think twice, maybe it's cheaper to throw on a jumper, grab a blanket and watch TV.
